It's June 1st y'all! This month is critical--it's the turning point of the year. The coming of July 1st marks a shift from the midpoint of 2016, and the completion of June will punctuate your progress for the year thus far. Personally, I want to ensure that I close it out right and tie up some major loose ends! Yesterday, I was fortunate enough to attend this FREE personal branding event at Wix Lounge. No free food or water this time, but this event was definitely one of the best educational events I have ever attended. I also made three connections in the audience, one of which who was someone needing help with her website design! I was seemingly the expert speaking to her, and it gave me a big confidence boost. As for the presentation, the speaker, Marcos Salazar, was nothing short of incredible. His slot was thought-provoking, challenging, and encouraging. After a few slides, he gave us this personal branding sheet. We were to answer one question at a time, and discuss with the person sitting next to us. I was in a group of three and met two lovely ladies who inspired the hell out of me! One woman works with high school students, I think. I say I think because she was very soft spoken. I may have missed some of the specifics, but she provided great feedback, and made me realize that what I exude and how I view myself are two different things. My goal for the end of this month is to ensure that those viewpoints are in sync. The other lady I met was a mature woman who was an actress, singer, and pianist. She was on Broadway and everything! As I looked around the crowd, I was excited to see the different generational groups in the room. It really reminded me that it's never too late to reinvent yourself, to invest in yourself, and to modify yourself! After Marcos' portion of the event, I realized that my personal brand, and this website, need an overhaul! I really don't have a tight elevator pitch, let alone a clear and defined explanation on my plans or what I do. Not that comparison is necessary, but I know I am not the only one who doesn't feel as confident as I should in this department. I enjoy writing here and on my social media because it gives me an opportunity to subtly expose my vulnerability. It allows my readers to face themselves and feel okay with the fact that the learning curve is steep and infinite. After about 1.5 hours of information and self-reflection, the Wix.com Community Manager, Adam Wozney, took over. He rounded out the presentation by explaining how this can all be translated through your social media and website. Both speakers were poised, confident, intriguing, and entertaining enough for their words to stick with me outside of me having to reference my notes. I will certainly be following up with them both to keep the dialogue going, and to seek advice. As I mentioned, Wix has a plethora of events. Check the calendar: http://www.wix.com/lounge/new-york. I made the decision to never go back to an official "school" again, outside of me working towards my real estate license this summer. However, learning is never ending, and I will continue to attend as many low cost/free seminars I can on various subjects. I will also vow to read a whole lot more than I am now. Ignorance is not bliss. There is nothing cute about not knowing information, and as it stands, I don't know if I can confidently say I am an expert in any particular subject. One of Marcos' questions was to write down something that I feel I am an expert in, that I would be able to give a 15 minute presentation on off the top of my head. I literally struggled like he asked me to dive into rocket science! I should not feel any anxiety about anything related to my own brand or explaining things that are important to me. By the start of July, I will be in that space of confidence and knowledge, and I will keep you all abreast of my progress at that time. I encourage you to do the same. We will be receiving a follow up e-mail with the full slideshow from last night. If you are interested in getting a copy for yourself, shoot me an e-mail [LINK|home]. CHAO!
Peace, Kings & Queens
